Arthington survive early scare to continue winning start

Arthington 1st XI – 214 all out

36.4 overs

157 all out – Burn 1st XI

40 overs

Umar Farooq: 102

Himanshu Satyawan: 31

Naveed Andrabi: 2-0-4-3

Brahm Singh: 10-1-32-3

Arthington’s 1st XI managed to record their fourth successive victory of the 2025 season following their transition to the Yorkshire Premier League North to leave them top of the table in the early stages. However, things could have been very different after the start of the home side’s batting innings resembled more of a football score; Arthington falling to 3/3 after just 13 deliveries. Three wickets, including that of the Arthington skipper, Naveed Andrabi, soon became four as the top four batsmen managed just four runs between them, but there then came a much-needed revival as Himanshu Satyawan and Umar Farooq put on 68 runs for the fifth wicket. Satyawan, an unbeaten centurion in the last match, needed just 22 balls to reach his 31, including 4 fours and 2 sixes before he was caught and dismissed.

That was the most sizeable partnership of the innings for the hosts, and batsmen came and went at more frequent intervals thereafter, all in support of Farooq who muscled his way to a determined and aggressive century, reaching 102 from just 94 deliveries including 11 fours and 4 sixes: his third century for Arthington but his first in the YPLN. There were handy contributions down the order as well from Brahm Singh (28) and Naveed Piran (29) and after a disastrous start, Farooq and his various batting partners had salvaged their way to a competitive total of 214 all out, but with a few overs to spare.

Not unlike the first half of proceedings, Arthington’s bowling effort got off to a bad start as well as Naveed Piran saw his first ball smashed over the boundary for six with another boundary following just three balls later, but Umar Farooq, the man of the match was on hand with the ball in hand as well, and took the first wicket via a catch from Kamrosh Khan. He helped himself to the second as well, this time thanks to a catch by Rahul Khode, but it was the spin of Khode that brought about the third wicket of the Burn captain, this time assisted by Brahm Singh. A 57-run partnership for the fourth wicket then followed, as the remaining opener combined nicely with Burn’s keeper, batting at number five, one of them looking, no doubt, to emulate Farooq’s efforts earlier in the day.

Unfortunately, for the visitors, that was not to be, as a pair of wickets in quick succession from the spin of Brahm Singh took care of the opening batsman, who had just reached his fifty and the man that replaced him: one bowled and one due to a catch by Ahmer Sadiq. When the remaining set batsman was removed by Khode it seemed that Burn’s hopes were fading, but there was a glimmer of a recovery as they brought the score to 156/6. However, any faint hopes were soon dashed as a caught and bowled by Singh for his third wicket on the day, followed by three wickets in the fortieth over from captain Andrabi ended the innings. Arthington won by 57 runs.

Arthington certainly aren’t doing things the easy way this season, but the impressive middle-order recovery after their worst start to a batting innings in recent memory dug them out of a hole. They now sit clear at the top of the Division 1 Ebor table having won all four of their matches. They face the prospect of two matches in quick succession over the long weekend with a trip to Church Fenton followed by a home match against Drax.

2nd XI summary – Away against South Kilvington

Arthington 2nd XI – 110 all out

30.3 overs

194/8 – South Kilvington 1st XI

40 overs

Mohammed Faiyazuddin: 29

Joe Seaborne: 24

Joe Seaborne: 10-2-38-3

Dougie Jones: 6-2-36-2

Arthington’s 2nd XI had some more poor fielding and a sub-par batting display to blame for their 84-run defeat against early league leaders South Kilvington. The 84-run margin would likely have been significantly reduced had early chances to dismiss the South Kilvington’s captain and opening batsman been held. Instead, with the help of some of the home side’s middle order, they put on 194/8 on a lively pitch and outfield that troubled batsmen, fielders and wicketkeepers alike.

Wickets upfront from Joe Seaborne gave Arthington an early edge but with the benefit of the four or five lives he was given, the opposing opener cashed in for 76 runs, including 6 fours and 4 sixes before Umer Khan finally held a good catch at cow corner to give Zaid Anwar a wicket. Dougie Jones got in on the act with two wickets assisted by Luke Seaborne at mid-off, his second catch of the game and another from Khan at point. There was also time for Joe Seaborne to take an excellent third scalp in a ten-over effort that deserved more. Riaz Piran ate into the South Kilvington tail in the latter stages, including a wicket from the final ball of the innings.

In reply, the pitch proved the undoing of Umer Khan who saw one burrow under his forward defence and strike the base of middle stump. Some good deliveries then saw off Jo Nash and Steve Potter before an edge behind off Gareth Meredith’s bat was easily held by the keeper. After Zaid Anwar also departed for just 3, Arthington found themselves in a predicament, but Mohammed Faiyazuddin and Joe Seaborne put on a good partnership and gave the Arthington chase some respectability, making 29 and 24 respectively including some lovely shots for boundaries.

A late flurry of runs from the lower order was not forthcoming, however, as Alex O’Neil came and went for a solitary six over deep mid-wicket and captain Luke Seaborne perished to his first ball. The visitors were ultimately bowled out for 110 with over 9 overs left unused.

Next week, the 2nd XI try their luck against Newby Hall at the ACG, hoping to pick up their second win of the season.
